Laparoscopic and robotic surgery are minimal access surgery to gain access to the peritoneal/thoracic cavities through small diameter ports. It avoids morbidity and sequelae associated with large incisions with equally good outcome, fast recovery and early return to work. Endoscopic surgery performed by intervention gastroenterologist and also to certain extent by surgeons through intraluminal or transluminal approach is expanding and even replacing laparoscopic and robotic surgery in many surgically treatable diseases of gastrointestinal tract.
